Duly Quoted: Fox and CNN Trade Jabs

"Journalism is key to what we do. Fox is doing something different."

-CNN news group president Jim Walton, who's credited with doubling CNN's profits over the last four years, from $200 million to $400 million.

"Apparently Jim's idea of journalism is televising debates and taking dives for candidates. When the debates are over and CNN slides back down to MSNBC's level, we assume Jim will return to the comfort of Time Warner's witness protection program."

-Fox News spokeswoman Irena Briganti, responding to Walton's words. With Fox's ad rates rising faster, CNN's edge over Fox in total revenue -- $1 billion versus $860 million in 2007 -- is in danger of evaporating.
