'NY Times' Editor to Reader: You Missed the Point

Everyone's a media critic.

Here's New York Times executive editor Bill Keller, answering a question from a Times reader
about yesterday's front-page story on John McCain's ethics (or at least his ethics with regard to a certain attractive female lobbyist):

I was surprised by how lopsided the opinion was against our decision, with readers who described themselves as independents and Democrats joining Republicans in defending Mr. McCain from what they saw as a cheap shot.

And, frankly, I was a little surprised how few readers saw what was, to us, the larger point of the story.

Silly readers. Why must you be so obtuse?

Other Times editors are also answering questions now as part of the paper's regular "Talk to the Newsroom" feature.
