The Story Behind That 'NY Times' McCain Story

The New Republic has published its account of the back story behind today's New York Times piece on John McCain's "ethics" (read: bimbo) issues. It's the story that may or may not have spooked the Times into finally pushing the button after three months of shilly-shallying.

The best part is executive editor Bill Keller's belittling email to the TNR writer, Portfolio alumnus Gabe Sherman: "This sounds like a pointless exercise to me--speculating about reporting that may or may not result in an article.
