Another Feel-Bad Moment at the 'LA Times'

Clearly, morale is not the top priority at Tribune Co. these days.

Hours after announcing the elimination of some 100-plus jobs and termination of an employee profit-sharing plan, and with the issue of succession hanging heavily in the air, the Los Angeles Times dumped another downer on its staffers: an indefinite postponement of the paper's annual editorial awards ceremony.

Here's the email that went out yesterday from Susan Denley, director of editorial development and hiring:

With so many changes under way, we're going to honor all the great work we did in 2007 with the Editorial Awards -- later. We've postponed the event from its planned Feb. 29 date. We've got all your entries and they've been screened and judged in the usual manner. We'll schedule a prize ceremony later and will let you know.
