'Times' to Sell About.com? Not So Much

A word about yesterday's report that The New York Times Co. has hired a banker to sell About.com: It's almost certainly not true.

A Times Co. spokeswoman declined to comment on the report, citing a longstanding policy of not responding to rumors about acquisitions or divestitures, but a source with knowledge of About's operations says no bank has been hired, nor will one be, as the site is integral to the paper's strategy moving forward.

"It's a pretty crazy idea," says the source, noting that the Times Co., through About, has made major web acquisitions in the past year including ConsumerSearch.com and UCompareHealthCare.com. "They're trying to increase revenues coming from digital."

Dealbook agrees.
