'Time' Person of the Year: Vladimir Putin

Time managing editor Rick Stengel just announced on Today that Russian president Vladimir Putin is the magazine's Person of the Year for 2007.

I gotta say, I love this pick. It's news-driven, hyper-relevant and concrete rather than mushy and consumer-driven, like last year's "You," or heart-warming, like 2005's "The Good Samaritans."

And it dusts off the long-disused tradition of recognizing the year's biggest bad guy as its top newsmaker. Not since 1979 has a dictator been POY.

Sorry, Al Gore. The Nobel's going to have to suffice.

N.B. Apparently Putin's spokesman will hold a telephone press conference for reporters to discuss the POY pick at 10:30 a.m. ET.
