News-division Layoffs at NBC, CBS
A couple of network news divisions are giving employees extra time off for the holidays. A lot of extra time.
At least seven people have been let go at NBC News, including senior producers at Nightly News and Today, according to TVNewser.
Meanwhile, FishbowlNY broke the news of staff cuts at CBS News.com. The Huffington Post then chimed in, saying an estimated 20 employees there have gotten the chop. Huffpo's Rachel Sklar quotes a source who calls the cull "a fucking bloodbath." Jesus, Sklar. Language.
UPDATE, 5:06 p.m.: More information on the CBS cuts. One of the laid-off employees tells my colleague Sam Gustin that the reduction comprised nearly half of the CBSNews.com editorial staff, including producers, reporters and editors.
"It was a very nasty thing to do" so close to Christmas, the ex-employee said, adding, "This is a cold, soulless corporation. There are people who have kids in college and private school" among those affected. (The source described the severance packages given out as "decent," however.)
"It's been very tough for awhile at the company," the former staffer added. "Very tense. After Betsy Morgan left [to join the Huffington Post, in October], things really went downhill."
