Murdoch Remaking 'Journal' at Warp Speed

More intelligence on what Rupert Murdoch has in mind for The Wall Street Journal, which he officially gets his mitts on tomorrow.

According to The New York Times:

The Journal will dismiss two to three dozen people on its news staff of about 750, probably through buyouts, officials at both companies say. The aim is not to reduce head count, which could actually increase, but to make room for a wave of hiring in areas Mr. Murdoch wants to expand and in some cases, simply to be rid of people.

You already know about the push for more national and international news, shorter stories, a punchier page one. But did you know a whole section's getting the chop? "There are already firm plans to eliminate The Journal's Marketplace section, containing articles on business trends and technology, in the first half of next year, with a new section taking its place."

And Murdoch has contemplated a still more radical move: "taking 'Wall Street' out of the paper's name to give it broader appeal." That idea, at least, was quickly dismissed.
