-Rupert Murdoch has promoted his son James to the No. 3 job at News Corp., the closest he has come so far to designating a successor. [NYT]

-Germany-based Bauer Publishing is buying Emap's consumer magazines, including the British titles FHM and Heat. Bauer bid about $2.3 billion for them. [FT]

-The disclosure that Iran probably hasn't had a nuclear weapons program since 2003 was bad news for CNN, which was set to air a special titled We Were Warned: Iran Goes Nuclear. [Variety]

-Arianna Huffington is in a slap-fight with Mike Huckabee after the Republican candidate criticized the Huffington Post's reporting on his role in the early release of a serial rapist. [Huffpo]

-ProPublica, the new investigative journalism-for-hire outfit started by former Wall Street Journal editor Paul Steiger, has named a managing editor. [Romenesko]
