'USA Today' Shrinks Newsroom by 9 Percent

America's biggest newspaper just got a little smaller. USA Today is eliminating 45 positions, or just under 9 percent of its total newsroom staff. The chop comes in the form of voluntary buyouts for employees with "15 years or more of Gannett experience and less than five years of online experience," according to a memo from editor Ken Paulson.

"It's unfortunate that we have to take these steps, particularly when our newspaper circulation is growing and USATODAY.com has been named the top news website in the country by the Online News Association," Paulson wrote. "Unfortunately, revenue has not kept pace and we're now facing the same cutbacks that so many other news organizations have already experienced."

And to think, if only USA Today were allowed to own a non-network-affiliated TV station in a top-20 market, all of this could have been avoided...
