Now It's Official: TimesSelect Is History

You heard it here first, folks: The New York Times is indeed putting paid to its paid-content program, TimesSelect. Starting tomorrow at midnight, it's all free, including the archives*, according to an article to be published in tomorrow's edition.

The decision, which will warm the hearts of heavy-hitting Times columnists who chafed at watching their stories go unread, "reflect[s] a growing view in the industry that subscription fees cannot outweigh the potential ad revenue from increased traffic on a free site."

Those Times spokespersons never did call me back, by the way. Is there a problem with the phones in the new building?

*CORRECTION: The archives cover 1923 through 1982 will still cost you. Articles from before 1923 are public domain, and those from after have been freed up.
