CBS Kvells Over Katie's Kudos
In case you had any doubt what the point of Katie Couric's trip to Iraq and Syria was, CBS has helpfully been running promos applauding her for a super-terrific job. One I saw quoted New York Daily News critic Richard Huff, who said, "She did it, and she did it well."
"She did it" -- as though putting on body armor and parading around a market were some kind of test Couric had to pass, and now we all have to accept that she officially has gravitas. Never mind that the ostensible reason for her trip wasn't to prove anything but to preview Gen. David Petraeus's report to Congress.
No doubt Couric did a credible job reporting from the field, but this is one of those "doth protest too much" cases. I'll be a lot more inclined to accept her as a real anchor once CBS stops feeling like it needs to rebrand her as one. When's the last time you caught NBC bragging that Brian Williams "did it" just for doing something his peers had already accomplished?
