Maybe 'Giuliani' Really Is Too Hard to Spell
Fred Thompson turned up on The Tonight Show last night to declare his candidacy, and Jay Leno was almost ready for him.
After an extremely perfunctory announcement -- "[W]e're not where we need to be right now, and that's one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. I'm running for president of the United States" -- Thompson endured a little prop humor: a series of gag campaign bumper stickers.
Look closely at the first one: "Fred Thompson: Cause Guiliani Is Too Hard To Spell." I'm pretty sure the misspelling of "Giuliani" was not part of the joke, because the mistake is subtle and the sticker is only visible for a moment.
And that was the most interesting part of the segment. Just see here, where Howard Kurtz chides Thompson for yet another "rambling and low-key" performance, and for a strange failure to make eye contact.
