Should Jocks Stay Away from Play?
We all know about the Sports Illustrated curse. Somewhat fewer of us know about the InStyle Weddings curse, which just claimed a new victim. There's even, apparently, an Elle curse.
And now I have another one to add to the list: the Play curse.
Sure, Serena Williams, who graced the most recent cover of The New York Times's sports supplement, won in straight sets at the U.S. Open last night.
But look at Mike Mussina, who spilled his strikeout secrets in a spread titled "The Art of Pitching."
When Play went to the printers, Mussina was on a four-game winning streak. Since then, he's lost three in a row, incluing last night's 16-0 defeat to the Tigers. "Probably the last nine innings are the worst nine innings that I've pitched in my whole career, in a row," he tells today's Times.
It's as good an explanation as any, right?
