Short Terms Wins Again in Hollywood

Once again, the big Hollywood studios show that they're too greedy even to be self-interested.

Paramount and DreamWorks have picked a horse in the high-definition video format contest, promising to release their movies exclusively in HD-DVD. This even though Blu-Ray, the alternative format, had been on the verge of establishing dominance and resolving the confusion for consumers wondering which format to invest in.

So why'd they do it? "Paramount and DreamWorks Animation together will receive about $150 million in financial incentives for their commitment to HD DVD, according to two Viacom executives with knowledge of the deal," per the Times.

And, hey, if Blu-Ray does come out on top, those suckers who bought HD-DVDs will end up having to buy Paramount and DreamWorks movies twice, right?
