Ex-Random House Chief Dusts off Byline

If you're wondering why there's a random item in this week's "Talk of the Town" about a little-known guitar player visiting a music store, the answer is in the byline. Daniel Menaker was the Random House editor in chief who was pushed out in June, reportedly because his tastes weren't commercial enough. Menaker has published only a handful of articles in the last few years, per Nexis, most of them in Slate or the Times magazine. He also, not at all coincidentally, spent 26 years at The New Yorker. In other words, that quirky "TotT" you were thinking of pitching, about that obscure but fascinating artist? Forget about it.
