Economic Naturalism, Airplane Edition

Fans of "The Economic Naturalist" (see here for an explanation of the idea behind the book, and here for a fan's notes) are always on the lookout for more everyday puzzles along those lines. So here's one from Aaron Schiff:

Why are passenger airplanes flown by airlines usually relatively new while freight airplanes may be very old?

I'm not completely convinced by Aaron's answer, but this is on a blog, which means that of course a commenter adds some useful information about aircraft design and regulation in the comments.

I think there's quite an appetite for this kind of question, so do let me know if you come up with one in the middle of the night.
