NASA Hails Space Taxi Geniuses
Entrepreneurs in the aerospace business can now compete for a great gig in the sky: creating the next space taxis.
NASA announced that it intends to provide $300 million to $500 million to at least two companies over the 21-month period starting in August so that they can design vehicles capable of delivering crews to and from the International Space Station, reports Space.com. Government contract hopefuls must certify that the vehicles can carry astronauts, and they may, if they’d like, design optional milestones for their proposals after the 21-month period is up.
With NASA’s program spaceflight technology in blackout mode since last summer, private companies including Virgin Galactic, Orbital Science, and Blue Origins, among others, are already in a space race to ferry supplies, astronauts, and tourists beyond the confines of Earth.
The agency hopes the first crewed demonstration flight will take place in the latter half of this decade, with regular commercially operated flights to the International Space Station beginning around 2017.
