SciClone China Faces Justice Review

The Justice Department is investigating SciClone Pharmaceuticals for issues related to its business in China, part of a wider probe of the pharmaceutical industry’s practices overseas.

SciClone received a subpoena Aug. 5 from the Department of Justice that “requests documents relating to a range of matters including interactions with regulators and government-owned entities in China, activities relating to sales in China and documents relating to certain company financial and other disclosures,” the company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

The Justice Department investigation is looking at issues with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the company said, a 1977 law that makes it illegal to bribe foreign government officials to get or retain business.

The Justice Department this year has said it is investigating AstraZeneca PLC, Baxter International Inc., Eli Lilly & Co., Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and, most recently, Merck & Co. for Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations in several countries.

More details on the Justice Department investigation of SciClone Pharmaceuticals China business are available from the San Francisco Business Times.
