Obama Aims to Cut HIV Infections

President Obama announces his plan today to cut HIV infections by 25 percent in the next five years as part of the country’s new national strategy on AIDS.

The plan, which does not appear to commit much more money to AIDS programs, also focuses on moving more people into treatment. The plan highlights the need to better focus treatment on African Americans, Latinos, gay men and bisexuals.

The U.S. already spends tens of billions of dollars a year on AIDS care, treatment and research. It’s stunning that this is the first formal U.S. policy on AIDS even though known reported cases in the country date back to the 1980s.

Any shift in resources will affect health care providers, including hospitals, clinics, testing centers and other businesses.

The president plans to talk about his policy later today in Washington.
