Reid's Bill to Cost $849 Billion

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is close to introducing an $849 billion health reform bill that would insure 94 percent of Americans, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Industry groups are clamoring to see the bill, which is the result of two Senate committee measures that have been merged.

While details of the bill are still unclear, here's what we do know: All Americans would be required to carry health coverage, insurance companies would be banned from denying coverage, and the Medicaid program would be extended to include more people. The government would provide credits to help some people afford insurance.

Reid is trying to get conservative Democratic senators, including Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas onboard to support bringing the bill to the Senate floor for debate. Without their support, the bill may be dead.
