AIDS Vaccine Was Overhyped

As it turns out, the big breakthrough in a study of an AIDS vaccine was a head fake.

The vaccine was only marginally effective, helping mostly people at low risk, according to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers involved in the human trial in Thailand, the biggest study of its kind, initially said two experimental vaccines showed promise for protecting against HIV infection. The vaccines are made by French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis SA and VaxGen Inc., a small, struggling California biotech company.

Last month, the scientists said the vaccines appeared to reduce infections by 31 percent. Additional data from the trial published today didn't show the same effectiveness.

The new data illustrates the difficulty and frustration as scientists spend decades searching for an effective HIV treatment. A number of big companies are still studying AIDS vaccines and treatments, including Gillead Sciences Inc., Merck & Co., Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Abbott Laboratories. But success in finding an effective vaccine has been elusive.
