Testosterone in a Can

Could the next big libido treatment for men come out of a spray can?

A testosterone-boosting drug developed by Australian-based Acrux Ltd. restored the hormone to normal levels in 84 percent of men tested in a study, Bloomberg News reports, citing the company.

Acrux will seek approval of the spray, Axiron, in the U.S. this year to compete in the $1 billion worldwide market for testosterone treatments, according to Bloomberg. It would compete with gels now being sold. Androgel, made by Brussels-based Solvay SA had sales of just under $500 million last year, and a gel made by Malvern, Pennsylvania-based Auxilium Pharmaceuticals Inc. had $125 million in sales, Bloomberg reports. (On Monday, Solvay got scooped up in a $6.6 billion deal by Abbott Laboratories.)

In the trial of 135 men in six countries, the participants reported having twice as much sex and 80 percent more libido on average after using Axiron.

The study results “exceeded all of our expectations,” chief executive officer Richard Treagus said on a call with analysts.
