Irving Penn Snaps Bacon, Duchamp, Johns...

Irving Penn may be best known for his fashion photographs, which have graced the pages of Vogue for more than half a century. But as the current exhibition of his portraits at The Morgan Library & Museum amply illustrates, he also catalogued some of the 20th century's most influential artists with his lens, and there's something satisfying about putting a face with such names as Louise Bourgeois, Barnett Newman, Francis Bacon, Lyonel Feininger, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Josef Albers, and Jasper Johns, an elder statesman of contemporary art currently enjoying some significant attention in New York and also one of Penn's most recent subjects.
