Auction Fiction

Reading last week's Home & Garden section in the New York Times, Figure Painting's curiosity was piqued. In the penultimate graph of a story about Philip Galanes and Michael Haverland's renovation projects was mention of Galanes' forthcoming book, Emma's Table, the plot of which "centers on a Nakashima table at auction, and the underhanded behavior it induces." That'd be George Nakashima, whose exquisitely crafted asymmetrical work has been a favorite among collectors of mid-century design, including Galanes. According to the Times, he bought a Nakashima table in the '90s and sold it at Sotheby's at the height of the boom in market for modern furniture. Emma's Table doesn't hit shelves until this summer, but Figure Painting has found a preview of sorts here.
