Artworthy
Artworthy is a recurring feature that calls out exhibitions, fairs, and/or other art world events worth your precious free time. This weekend's pick...
Generally speaking, art fairs are for the initiated. To be an artist exhibited at one of these highbrow affairs, you have to be recognized — if not by critics, then by collectors, dealers, the market. So what's an artist on the fringe to do? Show at the Outsider Art Fair, the 17th edition of which takes place this weekend at The Puck Building in Soho. (Although, there are still outsiders (i.e. outcasts) at the Outsider Art Fair.) This so-called outsider art is distinguished from "insider" art in that it can be "primitive, visionary, and intuitive" and the people who make it aren't formally trained and often "cope with obsessions and compulsions." To get a better idea of what outsider art is, check out (below) images of some of the works exhibited this year. Admission to the fair: $20.
