Art, Working for the City

Artist Olafur Eliasson, now known in circles beyond the world of contemporary art for his Louis Vuitton windows, has been commissioned by the Public Art Fund to create four man-made waterfalls in the East River. They'll run on "green power" and filter out any aquatic life that might be sucked into the pumps supplying the falling water, lest any environmental activists gripe. The public will get the pleasure of a public art project certain to be more inspirational than those Gates. And the Economic Development Corporation predicts that Manhattan, herself, will profit from The New York City Waterfalls, which are expected to generate $55 million for the city's economy as people flock to have a look. Or, as Mayor Bloomberg said, "Not only does public art excite and inspire New Yorkers, it helps draw visitors and adds millions of dollars into our economy."
