8 Schieles for a Klimt
The Neue Galerie on Manhattan's Upper East Side famously came into a gilt Klimt portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer when Ronald Lauder, one of the museum's founders, bought if for a reported $135 million in 2006. Now, the gallery is selling eight works on paper by Egon Schiele, Klimt's Austrian protégé, to help finance the acquisition of its very expensive crown jewel. (They'll still have more than 140 additional Shiele works in their collection.) The pieces go on the block at Christie's London on February 4th and are expected to fetch more than £7.6 million ($14.9 million). A selection of the works headed out of the museum:
