Today in the Art World...

Details on the Met's search committee charged with finding Philippe de Montebello's successor.

Yesterday, the New York Times ran a series on Montebello's departure. Today, it's the Wall Street Journal's turn: Montebello on why art museums matter, Eric Gibson (the Journal's Arts & Leisure features editor) on the venerable director's tenure at the Met, and Kelly Crow on the challenges of replacing him.

A record-breaking classical sculpture is on view at the Met...as art blogger Lee Rosenbaum previously noted.

Neil MacGregor, the director of the British Museum, is now also "Chairman of World Collections."

File under mysterious: The Art Newspaper reports that a new contemporary gallery — which appears to be set up by Glenn Fuhrman (Michael Dell's money manager and a noted collector), although Fuhrman won't comment on the matter — will open in Chelsea this month. The first show is curated by artist Chuck Close.

Jeweler Cartier has a contemporary art foundation in Paris.
