Bacon's Back

A work by Francis Bacon has surfaced for almost every major contemporary auction season in the past two years, and the upcoming February sales in London are no exception. Yesterday, Christie's announced that the artist's Triptych 1974-77, "the most important triptych by Francis Bacon to appear ever at auction," will go on the block at its King Street headquarters on February 6th — estimate upon request.

The piece depicts Bacon's lover, George Dyer, writhing at the center of each of three canvases and was painted shortly after Dyer committed suicide in the Paris hotel room he kept with the artist. Another macabre Bacon on the block.

Incidentally, it's reminiscent of the triptych that Iran's Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art is reported to keep in the basement. See below.
