Cristina Grajales on the Art (and Design) Worlds in 2007
The worlds of art and design are becoming increasingly blurred, with design galleries popping up amidst the white boxes showcasing contemporary art in Chelsea and, just last week, the announcement that Art Basel is taking a stake in Design Miami. And so, after talking to one, two, three art world figures about 2007, today we hear from its complement: Cristina Grajales shows work by modern masters like Charlotte Perriand and George Nakashima and contemporary designers like Ross Lovegrove and Rama Chorpash. She has also helped build the design collections of Ronald Lauder and Brad Pitt. Herein, the gallerist and advisor looks back on the year.
Favorite Museum Exhibition
Surreal Things: Surrealism and Design, Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Favorite Gallery Show
It's a tie — for design, it is Marc Newson at Gagosian, and for art, Carlos Amorales at Lehmann Maupin
Best New Artist
Tokujin Yoshioka. I have been fascinated with his design since I first saw his work in Milan in 2001, and this year he re-emerged as the Designer of the Year at Design Miami, and his book came out late last year by Phaidon. I think he is incredibly talented and pushes the boundaries with design.
Defining Moment/Event
For the Love of God — the diamond-encrusted skull by Damien Hirst
Holiday Wish List
A painting by the Mannerist painter Jacopo da Carucci Pontormo. I adore the surreal and modern quality to his paintings.
Predictions for 2008
Keep on discovering new talent!
