Philae Knight on the Art World in 2007
Yesterday, Alison Gingeras, the curator of François Pinault's collection, weighed in on the art world in 2007. Today, Philae Knight reminisces about stand-out shows, break-out artists, and what we can expect from the market next year. Knight is Content Editor of Phillips de Pury & Company's Phillips Art Expert, a website recently launched by the auction house to educate emerging collectors about the art world. (One feature called "ask simon" has auctioneer Simon de Pury answering questions on camera ranging from "Do I have to have a lot of money to attend an auction?" to "Should I buy art as an investment?".) Knight is also a member of the 2007-2008 Executive Committee for Whitney Contemporaries, a group of young art patrons that support the museum of American art in New York. Her picks, forthwith:
Favorite Museum Exhibition
Taryn Simon, An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
Favorite Gallery Show
Kristen Baker, Surge and Shadow, Deitch Projects
Best New Artist
Will Ryman at Marlborough Gallery in Chelsea
Defining Moment/Event
The opening of the MCA in Denver (Museum of Contemporary Art), signifying the interest in art communities outside of NYC & LA that are supporting living artists and ones in mid-sized American cities.
Holiday Wish List
A BIG Helen Frankenthaler painting.
Predictions for 2008
Artists will reach a less-wealthy demographic of collectors than is currently fussed about. Art for less than $5,000 will be sought after by younger & less experienced collectors.
