A Chinese stock market tumble tempered a sale at the Poly Auction Co.

The opponents of Randolph College's intent to sell four paintings from its Maier Museum met the modified bond deadline yesterday — they posted $500,000 and received permission from the court to raise the rest of the money (another $500,000) by February 15, 2008.

Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky was born today.
