Turner Prize 2007

Mark Wallinger took home the Turner Prize today for his State Britain, a reenactment of the peace protest staged outside parliament by Brian Haw. A press release referred to the work as a "bold political statement" and an articulation of "fundamental human truths."

But the piece he submitted for the Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Liverpool (up through mid-January) was not State Britain, but rather the film Sleeper, which shows the artist roaming an empty German gallery in a bear suit.

Listen to Wallinger talk about the piece here:

The £25,000 Turner Prize is awarded each year to a British artist under the age of 50. Past recipients include Damien Hirst — which may or may not cause one to question its stature — Martin Creed, and Grayson Perry.
