Masses at the New Museum

New Yorkers woke up on Sunday morning to find the first snowflakes of the season settling in a thin layer on tree branches and car hoods, but that didn't keep art lovers from trekking down to the Bowery for the New Museum's christening.

According to Gabriel Einsohn, the museum's communications director, more than 20,000 people passed through the galleries between noon on Saturday and 6 P.M. on Sunday as part of the 30-hour grand opening made free to the public by Target. That's at least 5,000 more than snagged tickets online prior to the event.

"The 15,000 was intended to be our manageable capacity number," Einsohn said. But in the end, they were able to accommodate the hopefuls that queued up outside the entrance and past a restaurant supply store.

Your next chance to check out the latest addition to the Lower East Side's burgeoning contemporary art community without paying out of pocket is Thursday from 7 P.M. - 10 P.M., the first of the CIT-sponsored free Thursday evenings.
