Seasonal Fare
Black Friday came and holiday-inspired merchandise appeared in shop windows across the globe. Don't think the art market is insulated from the pressure to push, for example, Santa-themed goods. From now until the 21st of December, when Figure Painting will take a hiatus for Yuletide, look here for ways in which the art world is participating in the season:
Paul McCarthy has turned Maccarone Gallery on Greenwich Street into a fully-functioning chocolate factory that every day produces 1,000 10-foot-tall Santas reminiscent of this irreverent sculpture seen at Art Basel in June. A much better conversation piece than your traditional confectionary St. Nick. Half the price of a 2.5-pound box of chocolates from La Maison du Chocolat. For the back story, read Calvin Tomkins "Talk of the Town" piece in the New Yorker.
If your taste runs more conservative (and your pockets are considerably deeper), Christie's is putting a Norman Rockwell image of Santa Claus on the block for approximately $3 million.
