Love Conquers All

Diamonds are forever. But is a showy rock worth more than a man's heart? The latter prevailed at auction this week. Last night, Jeff Koons' Hanging Heart (Magenta/Gold) fetched $23.6 million at Sotheby's, breaking the artist's auction record set the previous evening when his Diamond (Blue) got $11.8 million at Christie's (and establishing Koons as the most expensive living artist at auction, a title previously bestowed on Damien Hirst when his Lullaby Spring brought $19.1 million at Sotheby's London in June.) Gagosian Gallery, which represents Koons and originally sold the pieces to their consignor(s), won both the heart and the bauble.
