Ullens Opens

The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art opened today in an area of Beijing's Dashanzi district (or 798 zone) that sounds a lot like Chelsea in the early years (contemporary art encroaching on old industrial buildings). Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be much coverage of the center's public debut. The New York Times ran a piece on Guy and Miriam Ullens unveiling of their plans for the space in July, but there's nothing in the paper today on the UCCA or its first two exhibitions, '85 New Wave: The Birth of Chinese Contemporary Art and Lawrence Weiner: To Allow the Light. Was Beijing too far for the art world cognoscenti? For those who missed it, here's a before and after shot of one of the two naves that make up the center:

Inside are works by Chinese art stars Wang Guangyi, Xu Bing, and about 30 of their contemporaries.

In a little less than a year, 9 more museums for contemporary art will open in the Sichuan Province. The Chinese government has given one to each of nine Chinese artists, including Yue Minjun. The market for contemporary Chinese art is off, running, and seemingly gaining speed. Now we'll see how contemporary Chinese museums fare.
