Auction House Treasure, Borough Blight

Don't tell me there's not something incongruous about this:

As Banksy works continue to top pre-sale estimates at auction, fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars, the authorities of Tower Hamlets have decided to paint over tags the artist has left on walls in the London borough.

Who's the bigger fool? Collectors for paying so much money for art that can otherwise be had for free? Or the Tower Hamlets Council for not excising Banksy's graffiti for sale at a tidy profit?
