Design Art London
This was the first year of Design Art London, which, while small, included the best galleries — David Gill, kreo, Patrick Seguin. With all of the buzz about "design art," it's not surprising that a design fair joined the orbit around Frieze — one has already attached itself to Art Basel and Art Basel Miami.
My general impression from talking to galleries was that they were happy with the fair but that it wasn't a blockbuster success. "Oh, sales are fine," said Zesty Meyers of R 20th Century, a Tribeca-based gallery that specializes in mid-century modern. "We'll have to wait and see what happens."
On Sunday afternoon, there was a sparse — sparse — crowd, which was nice if you wanted to see things but may not bode so well for interest in the fair.
On the flip side, one exhibitor said the fair had been visited by the "people that matter," and Galerie Downtown from Paris reported sales to dealers that were exhibiting at Frieze — whether for personal collections or for resale, the staffer didn't know. Rumor has it, the fair is coming to New York during The Armory Show in March.
