Design Art?

Personally, I am skeptical of the so-called design art movement. It seems a lot like something dealers cooked up to milk as much as they can out of the contemporary art high everyone's on right now. (The theory goes that the same people buying contemporary art are interested in "design art.") But, then again, maybe I'm being too harsh on them. Alice Rawsthorn, design critic for the International Herald Tribune, moderated a panel on design art at Frieze today. Here is a choice Marc Newson* outtake:

"They're only limited edition because I can't bother to do that many of them...I can't be bothered to design for posh Italian companies any more."

Is this statement not a bit reminiscent of the model who said she wouldn't get out of bed for less that $10,000 a day?

*Marc Newson is the poster boy for "design art." One of his Lockheed Lounges, the first of which he made in his backyard and sold for $3,000 years ago, may fetch more than $2 million at Christie's this week.
