Laying the Law Down in France
The wheels of justice are beginning to turn in France:
One of the drunken hooligans involved in the d'Orsay break in over the weekend turned himself into police on Monday and gave up his accomplices, Reuters reports — and they're all under 19 years old. Apparently, he was scared into confessing by all of the coverage the damaged Monet was getting in the press. They can all claim "worst hangover ever."
The woman who kissed the Twombly painting will have to pay a $6,300 fine and take civics courses, if prosecutors have their way. I'm guessing that the $6,300 will cover restoration of the canvas to its original pristine white state. But civics classes? That's not what this woman needs. According to the New York Times, she told the court:
"I just gave it a kiss...It was an act of love; when I kissed it, I wasn't thinking. I thought the artist would understand."
Even the prosecution admitted that she " 'clearly does not realize what she has done.'" How about a mandatory consult with a mental health professional?
