Artworthy
Artworthy is a recurring feature we put up each Friday to call out exhibitions, fairs, and/or other art world events we think are worth your few days of free time. This weekend's pick:
The art world is often the stuff of movies.
My Kid Could Paint That
Opens Today in New York and Los Angeles
Marla Olmstead was called a child prodigy — the four year old's paintings have been compared to the work of Jackson Pollock — until 60 Minutes' Charlie Rose suggested her dad might be lending her a helping hand. This film explores the maelstrom that ensued. For locations and times, go here.
Strange Culture
Opens Today in New York; Columbus, Ohio; and Hartford, Connecticut
When artist Steve Kurtz's wife died in her sleep of heart failure in 2004, police found "scientific paraphernalia" he was using to put together an exhibition for the Mass MoCA in North Adams (yes, that Mass MoCA) in his home and decided he might be a bioterrorist. Strange Culture shows the "War on Terror" come to the art world. For locations and times, go here.
Rape of Europa
As art restitution cases emerge one after the other, this film shows the systematic looting of public and private European collections by Adolph Hitler — once an aspiring artist, himself — and his cronies. For location and times, go here.
Up next is a biopic of Gustav Klimt, whose work has enjoyed success in both the public and private markets of late. It reportedly comes to New York later this month.
