Gagosian Takes the Show on the Road

Just in case there was any question about contemporary art being a luxury good, Gagosian makes it explicit:

The gallery is staging a 10-day show at Barvikha Luxury Village, a shopping mall just outside of Moscow where the Russian nouveau riche can buy everything from a Prada bag to a Ferrari. Other retailers: Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta, Ralph Lauren, Balenciaga, Armani, Tiffany, Lamborghini, and Harley Davidson. When Gagosian sets up shop, it will install works by modern masters — Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Pablo Picasso — and contemporary art stars — Cecily Brown, John Currin, and Damien Hirst. It's even banking on limited edition design art finding as enthusiastic consumer base as it has in the West with one of Marc Newson's chairs (but not the Lockheed Lounge).

At least Gagosian is putting its sales ambitions right out there in the open?
