Art in Strange Places

For the most part, the stretch of William Street between Fulton and Broad in Manhattan's Financial District is a blight on the city. Tall, grey buildings. No trees. Only enough sunlight to distinguish day from night. Thankfully, patron-saint-of-the-arts David Rockefeller and Chase Manhattan Bank called in a commission from Jean Dubuffet in 1969. Now, Group of Four Trees sits on the bank's plaza.

The psychedelic black-and-white forest looks wildly out of place, but in a welcome way. If real trees won't grow downtown, you might as well have imaginary ones, and a little art goes well with commerce.
