Musical Chairs for Museum Directors

September has seen a lot of shuffling around of museum directors.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Olga Viso would leave the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. to take over for Kathy Halbreich as director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. On Tuesday, we learned that Kaywin Feldman is headed to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts from the Tennessee's Memphis Brooks Museum of Art — MIN's present director, William Griswold, is leaving for the Manhattan's Morgan Library & Museum. And today, the news is that Halbreich will become an associate director at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Halbreich is known for her edgy and forward-thinking programming at the Walker, and her addition to MoMA is being interpreted as a way for the museum to breath some life into its exhibitions. The Brice Marden and Richard Serra retrospectives may have been good, but they were predictable choices.

She told Carol Vogel, "I really want to spend time looking and studying the collection because I have a feeling there is more breadth there than we have seen." What could she pull out of MoMA's bunker?
