Restitution Roundup

The four children of deceased Dutch Jewish art dealer Nathan Katz are laying claim to 225 paintings and 2 tapestries presently in the collections of various Dutch museums.

The restitution request outnumbers that made by the heirs of Jacques Goudstikker by 25 pieces. The Dutch government decided to return all 202 disputed works to the Goudstikker heirs in February 2006.

A special commission of the Dutch government will look into the case.

The Lauder clan continues to make headlines for its Klimts: Ronald Lauder famously bought one of the artist's portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer for a reported $135 million last year. Now, the heir to a Viennese Holocaust victim says that a Klimt painting in the collection of Ronald's brother Leonard belongs to him. The heir hasn't filed a formal suit yet and is hoping for a settlement.

It's lawyers and auction houses who are getting the fattest off recent art restitution activity.
