Auction Block Stars, Museum Blockbusters
The two most expensive contemporary artists at auction are both getting retrospectives at the Tate Modern in London next fall.
An exhibition of Mark Rothko's work goes up in September 2008 and Francis Bacon will be in the limelight come October 2008.
I'm sure the museums would say no, but I wonder, is there any correlation between an artist's performance in the market and a museum's decision to mount a blockbuster of his or her work?
The director of Tate Britain told the Guardian that the Bacon retrospective would "take in loans form all over the world." Will that include any of the recent record-breakers?
And will the Rockefeller Rothko make an appearance?
