Christie's Blues Period

Has "Diamond Damien" started a trend?

Carol Vogel announces in the New York Times today that Christie's is selling Jeff Koons' Blue Diamond (2005-2006) in its November sale of post-war and contemporary art. It's not real bling, but rather 56 square feet of stainless steel.

The piece joins Andy Warhol's Liz (Colored Liz), a portrait of the actress Elizabeth Taylor set against a turquoise background and one of the sale's most highly anticipated lots.

Koons' current auction record is $5.6 million for Michael Jackson with Bubbles, which sold at Sotheby's in 2001, and Christie's, according to Vogel, is betting that it can more than double that with Blue Diamond.
