Boltanski at Marian Goodman

The highlight of Marian Goodman's "30/40" opening last night was Christian Boltanski's 6 septembres, a film of images culled from French newscasts each September 6th from 1944 to 2004 and sped up by a factor of 2,000. Buttons positioned in the small gallery where the film was projected on to three walls let viewers freeze frames of historical events ranging from Salvatore Allende's overthrow in Chile to Princess Diana's death. Stand in front of the film long enough, and you felt a little anxious, which was probably the point — to underscore the rapid passage of time from the beginning of life (Boltanski was born on September 6, 1944) to the end.
